Synopsis:
Steven is tall, dark, and damaged. He doesn't let anyone close, comfortable on the outside of normal life where he can hide his scars behind a wall so high that nothing gets through…except them. Despite a childhood marred with black and blue, he's survived and moved in with his two best friends, Sam and Charlie.Life should get better, but it was Sam who held him when the dark threatened to swallow him whole, Sam who gave him a place that felt like home, and Sam who knew every scar and every broken place.
And it's all been taken away with Charlie sharing Sam's bed.
Without his former comfront, Steven realizes what's been hiding in the deep corners of his heart, and the truth sinks him like a weight. He’s in love with one or maybe both of his roommates. Navigating unrequited love tears Steven apart and brings him to the precipice, and he has to choose: his feelings or Sam’s…and Charlie’s?

My Thoughts:
“Even if it’s harder we can work on things between us. Small things, I do want this.”
I usually don’t tend to read new adult books but because I enjoyed J.R’s other books and his writing style I decided to read Veil of Scars. I am so glad I did because this story was not about three college students; this story was about the love between them and a journey of self-discovery. For me, a sign of a talented writer is if you took the same storyline and apply to any age group it would make sense. With this story, you could because J.R. does not focus on the college aspect of the characters; he focuses on the relationship between Sam, Steven, and Charlie. Well-done Mr. Gray.
What blew me away about this story was the dynamic between Sam, Steven, and Charlie and the maturity they showed about their relationship. Sam and Charlie is patient as Steven navigates his feelings for both of them; Steven and Charlie is patient and keep their jealousy in check as Sam discovers more about himself and whom he loves.
My only complaint (if you can really call it that!) is that it was too short. I would love to see how Sam, Steven, and Charlie’s relationship plays out through college and into the adult world.
If you are looking for a story about love and acceptance – then this book is for you.
